EPUB read-aloud

Koharia can read EPUB chapters sentence by sentence while following the text with sentence-level highlighting. It is for reflowable EPUB text, not image comics or files without extractable text.

Engines and keys

• Microsoft Edge TTS: the default online engine and does not require an API key.
• Xiaomi MiMo TTS: requires your own API key from Xiaomi; voices are stored separately per engine.

API keys stay on the device and are encrypted with the Android system Keystore. Do not place a key in screenshots, backups, or public issues.

Playback controls

The reader can start, pause, resume, stop, skip to the previous or next sentence, and change speed. Read-aloud prefetches upcoming sentences and can continue into the next chapter; lock-screen and Bluetooth media controls are also supported.

Audio focus is handled so playback can resume after a short interruption such as a phone call. Generated sentence audio is cached on the device to reduce repeated synthesis.

Privacy notice

To synthesize speech, the current chapter text is sent to the selected TTS vendor. Koharia shows a confirmation before the first listen and keeps the recipient visible in settings. Do not enable a network synthesis engine if you do not want chapter text to leave the device.

When read-aloud fails, check the network, engine configuration, API-key status, and whether the current EPUB exposes readable text.
